the super falcons don't need faux support⚽
Let's be real. A lot of us like to support people only when they win.
A few days ago, the Super Falcons of Nigeria won the WAFCON trophy. For a team that has lacked adequate amenities and support for consecutive competitions, they triumphed against all odds.
From the start of the campaign, they didn't have as much support as you would expect for a national side but immediately they grabbed that trophy, every one was singing their praise.
And once again, we did it, showed up for the Super Falcons—only when they won the trophy.
The Super Falcons won the just concluded Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament and won it for the tenth time. That's 8 more times than any other winner ( Equatorial Guinea have won it twice). At this point, the title should be named after the Falcons because they own it. allow this agenda.
The Super Falcons went unbeaten the whole competition and conceded their only open play goals in the final. That is an impressive statistic on its own.
But they topped that. They came back from two goals down to win the trophy against hosts, Morocco, and celebrations were through the roof. Champions of Africa for the tenth time!
As expected, a lot of people would celebrate, many would be famzing the Falcons hence the faux support.
You see, success brings a lot of friends, and not all of them are good friends. Some people are just there because you're winning. When it becomes rough, they desert you.
Brands, government officials, individuals who weren't interested or paid attention to this journey from the start were all celebrating, and it was expected. We know that if the Falcons had lost that final, the story would have been different.
I mean, many people didn't care about the competition until they heard the Falcons were in the final. For others, the only Super Falcons game they've watched so far was the final.
Honestly, I get it. You may not like women's football or actually care about it but this brings what I said earlier.
Let's be real, a lot of us like to support people only when they win.
A large number of people don't turn up for their friends or family members when things are tough but once the going gets good. They're there to famz the star.
What happened to trusting the process? What happened to be somebody they could lean on? What happened to actually caring?
This isn't just about women's football. It's about you and I as a people and as a race. Many times, we don't show up when it matters. We only do it when it's glamorous and it's something that needs to change.
You don't have to do the big things. Little things matter and they matter a lot.
Phone a friend you haven't heard from in a while. Help someone when they're down. Listen to a friend who has something to share.
We have to do better for our friends, family and our community. The Bible says charity begins at home and honestly it does. It starts with us.
Congratulations, you made it to the end. I would love to hear your thoughts. Feel free to leave a comment.
Did you watch the match? What did you think?
Do you think one can famz with pure intentions and without being hypocritical?
What are some practical ways you keep up with friends and family?
