nigerian federal uni hostels are a department in hell😭
The pain, the torment, the torture is it not enough?
Miss me? Well, that feeling will be a recurring one because Answers For Gen Z now has a team of dedicated creatives and last week you were introduced to one of them. Hopefully, you will get to know every member of the team very soon.
I miss sharing my musings with you so per the request of the WhatsApp fam, I'll be reliving the horror that is my school hostel.
the gist.
It's no longer news that there's no light to do jack in Great Uniben since BEDC cut us off four weeks ago and although everyone has seemingly acclimatised to the situation, I must say it hasn't been easy, especially for people like me living in the Halls of Residence.
Before the session began, the school management increased hostel fees and school fees and we really couldn't do anything about it because the people we voted for who were supposed to fight for us went to fight for politicians whose kids most definitely aren't in this country. We were told the reason for the increment was for our own good and because of the state of things in the country. We were promised that there was going to be some repairs and work done in these halls of residence. Hell, we saw them making calculations, perambulating from one room to the other, making estimates and checking whatnot the previous semester so we thought their reasons were valid.
Now, tell me why I came into an evil forest that harbours buildings when I resumed three weeks after school resumed. Bushes, no repairs, no renovations, students still going to empty rooms to steal cupboard doors and bunks, everything was still the same if not a little bit worse. There was light that time. Little did we know darkness was coming and when it came– oh my Lord!
I've been living in the Boys-only hostel the school has to offer for three sessions now and every semester, it gets worse. This semester it got even more appalling because of the light sitch. My hostel, Hall 4 has 3 units, 1, 2 and 3. I got into unit 3, apparently the best of the three according to what other staylites said but it didn't look like it to me. It still looked like units 1 and 2.
“There's always light and water”. “The toilets and bathrooms are okay” “The reading room is good too”.
Liars! The lot of them!
Don't even get me started on the heap of refuse that has been on the narrow pathway to hall 1 since last semester. Freshers go think say na exhibition we dey do. Their fantasies of grown-ish have been botched, except they're staying off campus. I pity them sha; this being their first experience as first-year students of the uni. Anyways, what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger abi?
According to our VC, millions have been spent to renovate our halls of residence and alleviate our suffering in this time of gross darkness. The school provides light for us in the evenings from 7 to 10 and mornings from 6 to 7 every day. Don't ask me how I cook or charge or iron. Oh, water. I have learnt water bending, and gone to streams and wells to get water. In my hostel, the way buckets are queued up, you'll think they are Israelites walking to the Promised Land. The supposed unit 3 that always has water has its taps flowing like they have all the time in the world😭 I don't even bother fetching water from my unit.
That's my Hall 4. I heard the new hostel they built for the new students that cost 120k doesn't have a gen💀 What about the female or unisex hostels? I wonder how they survive too.
Students whose houses are in Benin, go home every weekend to save themselves from this hardship. I'm writing from my parents' house now. I had to because my dad is celebrating his birthday tomorrow, and the Eid holidays. Make person noh go crase because the past two weeks have been crazy for me.
More than half of unit 3 and 2 didn't have light when they put on the gen. I had to take all my foodstuff and gadgets to my friend's room in unit one and even his room had light issues. You had to use torchlight even with two bulbs working well and had to be careful about what you chose to plug because of the current.
My hostel is shit. Some residents aren't even helping the situation because I don't understand why full-grown young adults that probably have girlfriends or toasting girls are shitting on the bathroom floors or not flushing after messing up the toilet! The cleaners have cursed and cursed.
I think the only good part of all of this is the football, basketball and volleyball they play every evening (I don't really care because I'm not a sports person) but some of them probably end up sleeping with all that sweat because they might not get water.
